Deep within each of us lies a garden, shaped by a rich blend of imagination, memory, character, and dreams that combine in unique and wonderful ways in our innermost selves. Many of us long to bring that garden to life, to possess it and give it form.
Julie Moir Messervy discusses steps of garden-making with her clients, illustrating her talk with gardens from around the world and of her own design. Principal of Messervy Associates, she specializes in the design of contemplative gardens.
Messervy attended the MIT School of Architecture where she received her Master of Architecture and Master of City Planning. She trained with the eminent Japanese garden master Kinsaku Nakane in Kyoto, Japan.
She has built gardens throughout the Boston area for the past fifteen years, working with private clients and institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts, where she designed Tenshin-en, The Garden of the Heart of Heaven, with Professor Nakane; Mount Auburn Cemetery; and Fidelity Investment Company.
Ms. Messervy's book Contemplative Gardens, published in 1990, was called one of the best garden books by the New York Times. Her second book, The Inward Garden, was published in 1995, and is the basis for this lecture.
